Single-phase or three-phase: which SOFAR system fits?

Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, but larger homes, farms and businesses often have three-phase. Here is how that affects your choice of inverter.

How to tell which supply you have

Most UK homes have a single-phase supply. Three-phase is more common on larger properties, farms, and commercial buildings. A three-phase supply usually has three main fuses and a three-phase meter. If you are not sure, an installer can check during a survey.

SOFAR options for a single-phase home

  • PowerAll single-phase (ESI 3–6K-S1) — all-in-one inverter and stackable battery
  • HYD-EP and HYD-LS1-PRO hybrid inverters — solar plus battery
  • TL-G3 and KTLM-G3 solar inverters — solar only, with KTLM-G3 offering two MPPTs for split roofs

SOFAR options for a three-phase property

  • PowerAll three-phase (ESI-T1, 5–12 kW) — all-in-one storage
  • HYD KTL-3PH and HYD-LT1 hybrid inverters, 5–20 kW
  • KTLX-G3 solar inverters from 3.3 kW

Connecting to the grid

Any system that can export has to be registered with your local electricity network operator (DNO). Smaller systems — up to 16 A per phase, roughly 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply — are usually connected under the G98 process, where the installer notifies the DNO after installation. Larger systems fall under G99, which needs the DNO's approval before installation. Your installer handles this paperwork.
